The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is the event of a lifetime, with 72 nations landing in the Midlands to compete across 283 events in 20 sports. DRPG is proud to be the Official Promotional Events Services Provider. We just couldn’t wait to get involved with such an extraordinary event right in our back yard, so we started with the creation of a film to launch the uniform 14,000 volunteers would wear for the historic 2022 Games.
This was a big moment – the world would see the new uniform, the inspiration behind it, and the wealth of talent across Birmingham. We wanted to get people excited for the Games and eager to uncover more of its host city, so there was no question where we would film. Our team took to the streets of Birmingham, capturing all the energy of places that had inspired the uniform design.
We showcased local talent in casting too, with a professional free runner, a freestyle dancer, and a parasport athlete bringing the film to life. They were introduced without uniforms, giving us the opportunity to create real ‘wow’ moments as each emerged in uniform in different parts of the dynamic and diverse city. As the group made their way to a final destination, we showed off the incredible detail of the uniform, and amplified its connection to Birmingham with lively motion graphics.
After some slick editing, the film made its big debut at the Volunteer Orientation Broadcast. Moments later, it was released to the rest of the world across multiple platforms.
Soon it racked up over 30,000 views and continued to reach more and more people with coverage on BBC News, ITV News, Birmingham Live, and more.
We brought real energy, passion, and life to the project, creating a film that generated huge amounts of excitement. Commonwealth Games’ stakeholders agreed, saying, “We really did create a bit of history together. From staff, prior Gamers, and most importantly the volunteers themselves, the feedback has been both plentiful and overwhelmingly positive.” We’re getting ourselves amped up just thinking about it again!
This exceptional project, which not only showcased local talent but also captured the essence of the Commonwealth Games, has been recognised at the New York Film and TV Awards, winning Bronze for Public Relations & Social Engagement. This external recognition further highlights the impact and success of the film in engaging and resonating with a global audience.
