Wyre Forest District Council Educational AR App

AR Gamification Immersive experience
Wyre Forest District Council wanted an immersive AR app that would break the ordinary and educate users about the local history of three Worcestershire areas. The challenge? Make learning fun, compelling, and unforgettable for families, particularly kids. Post-pandemic, the goal was to get them to engage with the area in a way that wasn’t just another history lesson, but a wild, captivating journey.

INSIGHT

People don’t learn when they’re bored. They learn when they’re entertained. So, we ditched the typical, mediocre approach and asked: What’s the best way to keep kids hooked on history? Our answer: A mix of Horrible Histories and Monty Python chaos. We partnered with the Rose Theatre to craft authentic, funny characters that had deep ties to the region. Local knowledge and flair fused into the app, making it not just an educational tool, but a portal to adventure.
SOLUTION

Immersive AR Adventure. We brought history to life with a unique mix of fun and learning. Three ghostly Town Criers, each tied to a town's rich heritage, guided users through the AR experience. Players went on a quest to find historical items, unlocking clues and stories along the way.

Geo-fenced Interactivity. Geo-fencing technology triggered AR moments when users entered designated areas. It turned the entire town into a playground for learning, keeping users engaged as they explored. Every step mattered, every corner held a new discovery.

Gamified Exploration. Engagement was essential. As users found items, they added them to a satchel, with progress bars and badges motivating them to keep going. The app made learning feel like a game, one level at a time.

Endless Potential. Designed to grow, the app laid the foundation for expansion. Once users completed the three town trails, the door was wide open for new areas to be explored, ensuring that the experience stays fresh and exciting for families well into the future.

IMPACT

With immersive AR, hilarious characters, and real local stories, we turned educational content into a journey. The Town Criers became icons. The towns became landmarks of exploration. And the future? It’s wide open. This app can easily expand to include other areas. We've not just encouraged visits, we’ve reignited a love for learning and local history. And that? That’s a win.

PERSPECTIVE

"We are really pleased to launch this exciting project which will be engaging for all ages and abilities. It’s great to learn about the area in an innovative and creative way and we are looking forward to hearing how residents and visitors enjoy the app."
